Gold and Ivory between Medieval Africa and Europe
Gold and Ivory between Medieval Africa and Europe
This ongoing, interdisciplinary research project examines the role of North-East African realms in the trade in gold and ivory between Africa, the Islamic Middle East and Europe in the 12th-16th centuries.
Together with PD Dr Elizabeth Yohannes of the Stable Isotope Lab of the University of Konstanz, I also aim to examine an ivory plaque carved in 12th-century Trier, Germany, to trace the origin of a medieval ivory work from Africa to Europe using historical, art historical, and bio-chemical methods.
